welcome

Welcome to Nandewah Farm. We are a large scale
commercial operation situated near Cowra, in Australia. Our deep, fertile soils
support a number of enterprises ranging from the 1000 head angora flock to a
herd of 130 commercial angus cows producing yearling steers and heifers, to a
diverse cropping mix including wheat, canola, triricale, lupins and oats.
All pastures are sewn to
improved species, half lucerne, and the rest a mixture of perennial grasses
(phalaris, cockfoot, rye and fescue) and clovers. Surplus pasture is cut and
made into silage or hay, a proportion of which is sold off farm.
Our property is situated
between 2 billabongs in the Lachlan
Valley and has a ready supply of water and deep, fertile soils. We implement
conservation farming practices which include stubble retention (with minimal
burning), one pass sowing and a balanced rotation between cereals, legumes
and pasture leys.
The Workforce
The varied activities on Nandewah are run by John and Janet Leigh (who mainly
deal with the livestock) and an employee, Graeme Gay (who mainly deals with
the machinery and crops). The farm work is also made easier with the
assistance of five invaluable dogs (three maremmas – Benny, Beau, Jay
Jay, who guard the goats from predation by foxes and eagles, and Sooty and
Bluey, both kelpie crosses which supervise the stock movements).
Nandewah Farm is owned
and run by John and Janet Leigh.
John was a research
scientist with the CSIRO for 37 years and has kept dairy or angora goats for
44 years. Janet was formerly a teacher and angora breeder for 26 years.
